Tips on How to Make a Wig Look Natural

Why natural-looking wigs are important

  • Natural-looking wigs are really important because they help people look good without anyone noticing they’re wearing a wig.
  • They’re especially helpful for people who’ve lost their hair due to sickness or other reasons. Wearing a natural-looking wig can help them feel better about themselves.
  • These wigs blend well with a person’s own hair, making it hard to tell where the wig starts and their real hair ends.

Choosing the Right Wig

Consider the wig material (human hair vs. synthetic)

Human hair wigs:

Offer the most natural look and feel because they are made from real human hair. Can be styled using heat tools just like natural hair. Tend to be more expensive than synthetic wigs.

Synthetic wigs:

Are made from artificial fibers, which can mimic the appearance of real hair. Retain their style, even after washing, making them low-maintenance. These are generally more affordable than human hair wigs.

Select a wig that matches your natural hair color and texture

Consider factors such as:

  • The shade and undertones of your natural hair.
  • Whether your hair is fine, medium, or thick.
  • Any highlights or lowlights present in your hair.

Ensure the wig fits comfortably and securely

  • Measure your head circumference to find the right wig size.
  • Look for wigs with adjustable straps or wig caps to customize the fit.
  • Wig caps can also help keep your natural hair flat and secure underneath the wig.
  • Test the wig by moving your head and ensuring it stays in place without feeling too tight or loose.
  • A comfortable fit is essential for all-day wear and confidence in your appearance.

Preparing Your Natural Hair

Grooming and Styling:

Before putting on your wig, it’s essential to ensure your natural hair is well-groomed and styled. Start by washing and conditioning your hair to make sure it’s clean and manageable. Use a wide-tooth comb or brush to detangle your hair gently, and apply smoothing products like serum or leave-in conditioner to tame any frizz and create a smooth base for the wig.

Using Wig Caps or Hair Accessories:

To keep your natural hair flat and secure underneath the wig, consider using wig caps or other hair accessories. Wig caps are great for flattening your hair and providing a smooth surface for the wig to sit on. Alternatively, you can braid or twist your hair close to your scalp to minimize bulkiness under the wig. Secure the wig cap or hairstyle in place with bobby pins or clips if necessary.

Trimming or Adjusting Your Hair:

Sometimes, it’s necessary to trim or adjust your natural hair to better blend with the wig. Trim any excess length or bulkiness from your natural hair, especially around the nape of the neck and hairline. Blending any harsh lines or layers in your natural hair will create a seamless transition between your hair and the wig. If you’re unsure about how to prepare your hair, consider consulting a hairstylist for professional advice.

Incorporating Hair Accessories

Enhance the natural look of your wig by incorporating hair accessories that complement your style and personality.

  1. Consider adding headbands, scarves, or hair clips to accessorize your wig and add flair to your hairstyle.
  2. Choose accessories that match the color and texture of your wig for a cohesive and polished look.
  3. Experiment with different accessory styles, such as bohemian-inspired headbands or vintage-inspired hair clips, to express your individuality.
  4. Hair accessories can also help secure the wig in place and add extra dimension to your overall appearance.
  5. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different accessories to create unique and eye-catching hairstyles that make your wig look even more natural and stylish.

Scalp Massage and Gentle Touch

Make your wig look even more natural by giving your scalp some gentle care.

  1. Use your fingers or a soft tool to gently massage your scalp under the wig. This helps improve blood flow and feels nice and relaxing.
  2. Lightly tap or brush your scalp to wake up your hair follicles and encourage your hair to grow naturally.
  3. Try using special oils or serums on your scalp to keep it healthy and hydrated. This makes your scalp happy and helps your hair look its best.
  4. These little messages not only make your wig look better but also feel good and help keep your scalp healthy.
  5. Doing these massages regularly can keep your own hair healthy and make the wig blend in better, giving you a more natural look overall.

Styling Techniques

Parting the Wig:

Creating a natural-looking part is essential for making the wig look realistic. Use a comb or your fingers to create a part that aligns with your natural part or complements your face shape. Opt for a zigzag or slightly off-center part for a more realistic look rather than a perfectly straight one.

Using Heat Styling Tools:

If your wig is heat-resistant, you can use heat styling tools like curling irons or flat irons to style the hair. However, it’s crucial to use a low-heat setting to avoid damaging synthetic fibers or altering the texture of human hair wigs. Excessive heat exposure can lead to irreparable damage, so use heat styling tools sparingly and with caution.

Experimenting with Hairstyles:

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different hairstyles to find the most flattering look for you. Try out updos, ponytails, loose waves, or other styles to see what complements your features and personal style. Changing your hairstyle can completely transform your look and give you the confidence to rock your wig in any situation.

Adding Layers or Highlights:

For added realism, consider adding layers or subtle highlights to the wig. Layers help mimic the dimension and movement of natural hair, while highlights or lowlights break up solid colors and create a more natural appearance. If you’re unsure about how to customize your wig, seek advice from a hairstylist or wig specialist who can help you achieve your desired look.

Customization and Personalization

Trimming the Wig:

Customize the wig to better suit your face shape and preferences by trimming it. You can adjust the length or layers to enhance your features and achieve the desired style. Be careful when trimming to avoid cutting too much, and consider seeking professional help if you’re unsure.

Adding Baby Hairs:

To create a more natural appearance, consider adding baby hairs or small wisps of hair along the hairline. These tiny hairs mimic the fine hairs that naturally frame the face and help blend the wig seamlessly with your skin.

Using Makeup for Adjustment:

Use makeup to adjust the color of the wig’s lace or roots to match your skin tone. This technique helps camouflage any visible edges or knots, making the wig appear more natural and seamless.

Maintenance and Care

Regular Washing and Conditioning:

Keep your wig looking fresh and natural by washing and conditioning it regularly. Use specially formulated wig shampoo and conditioner, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for best results. Avoid using regular hair care products, as they may contain ingredients that can damage the wig fibers.

Proper Storage:

When not in use, store the wig properly to prevent tangling or damage. Place it on a wig stand or mannequin head to help maintain its shape and keep it free from dust and debris. Avoid storing the wig in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as this can cause the fibers to become brittle and lose their luster.

Avoiding Excessive Heat or Friction:

To preserve the shape and texture of the wig, avoid exposing it to excessive heat or friction. Be cautious when using heat styling tools, and always use a heat protectant spray to minimize damage. Avoid rubbing or brushing the wig too vigorously, as this can cause the fibers to fray or tangle.

Confidence and Comfort

Embracing Your New Look:

Embrace your new look with confidence and pride. Remember that wearing a wig is a fun way to experiment with different hairstyles and enhance your appearance. Own your style and walk with confidence wherever you go.

Practice and Adaptation:

Practice wearing the wig in different settings to feel comfortable and natural. Experiment with different styling techniques and hairstyles to find what works best for you. With time and practice, wearing the wig will become second nature, and you’ll feel more confident in your new look.

Positive Attitude:

Keep a positive attitude and mindset, as it can enhance the natural appearance of your wig. Focus on the aspects of your appearance that you love and celebrate your unique beauty. A positive attitude radiates confidence and makes any hairstyle, including a wig, look even more fabulous.
