Are Hair Toppers Bad For Your Hair?

Are Hair Toppers Bad For Your Hair?

Hair Toppers are not bad for your hair if you use them correctly. They are easy to use; all you have to do is to wear them with care, and you are good to go.

Hair toppers are those hair pieces you wear by clipping them to your hair. You’ve probably heard them being called ‘half wigs’ or ‘wiglets’ since they are not as big as regular wigs and are used to cover smaller sections.

This small coverage can actually be an advantage, especially if you want your natural hair to show.

Generally, people wear hair toppers to cover up areas of balding or thinning hair. You can also wear them to add more volume to your hair or just to give it a healthier look. Regardless of what you use it for, hair toppers are excellent hair accessories.

Of course, being excellent doesn’t mean they’re perfect. In fact, people often have a major concern about hair toppers, which is why they ask:

Do hair toppers damage hair?

The answer to that is ‘no’. If you’ve been wondering whether hair toppers will cause you to lose your hair, then you can put your mind at ease.

That said, just because hair toppers aren’t bad for your hair doesn’t mean that using them wrong won’t have consequences.

So, if you’re asking:

Can hair toppers cause hair loss?

The answer is: possibly, but only if you don’t use them the right way. Your hair toppers can cause hair loss if you clip them to damaged hair, use the wrong size, etc.

Ways to prevent hair damage using your hair topper

1. Use the right size

How large your hair loss is determines the base size of the hair topper you get. A small topper will not cover everything you want or you might need to attach it to weak hair at the edge of the thinning area to cover everything. Of course, doing that will cause even more damage. Remember to add an inch to the borders of the area you want to cover so that any topper you get would be clipped to healthy hair. Or, you can get a custom hair topper made to fit your needs specifically.

2. Use good-quality hair topper

High-quality hair toppers are natural-looking and comfortable to wear. Low-quality hair toppers, on the other hand, are awkward-looking and their clips are often bad on the hair. Low-quality clips would place stress on your natural hair, leading to hair damage or breakage due to pressure. You can get your hair toppers from our shop or other reputed online stores with promising reviews.

3. Use your hair toppers carefully

Remember that you’re clipping your hair topper to your natural hair; you have to do it carefully to avoid damaging it. Make sure you place the hair topper properly when you put it on so you don’t put unnecessary pressure on your hair. The same caution applies when you take off the hair topper; be gentle and please, do not yank it off.

4. Give your hair regular breaks

No matter how much of an expert you are at placing hair toppers, wearing them all the time can damage your hair. Remember to give your hair relief from the constant pressure by taking off your hair toppers, especially when you sleep. This gives your scalp time to breathe and recuperate.

Things to Consider Before Getting Hair Toppers

Things to consider before buying hair toppers

Check Your Hair Situation

Before taking the plunge into the world of hair toppers, it’s crucial to examine your current hair situation thoroughly. Imagine your hair as the landscape on top of your head – is it a dense forest, a sparse meadow, or maybe a mix of both? Understanding the lay of the land is paramount before embarking on the journey of hair toppers.

If your locks are sending distress signals, it’s advisable to consult with a hair expert. Picture them as the wise Gandalf of the hair world, offering guidance through the twists and turns of your hair journey. Their expertise can help determine if your hair is primed for the transformative power of a topper or if it requires some tender loving care before venturing into hairpiece territory.

Taking a proactive approach in assessing your hair situation ensures that you’re making an informed decision about whether a topper is the right fit for your unique hair landscape. After all, the effectiveness of hair toppers depends significantly on the starting point – your natural hair.

Ask Your Hairstylist

Seeking the counsel of your hairstylist is akin to consulting with a trusted advisor before making a significant life decision. These hair wizards possess an intimate knowledge of your locks, having been with you through countless trims and styles. Their opinion on whether your hair is ready for the topper challenge or needs some extra care beforehand is invaluable.

Consider your hairstylist as the GPS guiding you through the twists and turns of your hair journey. They can provide insights into the health of your hair, its capacity to handle a topper, and whether any underlying issues need attention. Collaborating with your hairstylist ensures that you’re not navigating the topper terrain alone but with the expertise of someone who knows your hair’s history and potential challenges.

Ready for Commitment?

Now that you’ve assessed the lay of the land and consulted your hair confidant, it’s time to contemplate the commitment involved in adopting a hair topper. Think of a topper as a new addition to your daily routine – it’s not a brief fling; it’s a long-term relationship that requires care, attention, and commitment.

Much like a pet that becomes a part of your daily life, a topper demands regular maintenance. Cleaning, styling, and detangling become part of the routine, and you must be prepared to invest time and effort in keeping your topper looking its best. Consider your lifestyle and whether you’re ready for this level of commitment before taking the topper plunge.

How Will You Attach It?

Choosing how to attach your topper is a critical decision that can significantly impact your overall experience. Whether it’s clips, glue, or tape, each method comes with its own set of considerations. It’s like selecting the right adhesive for a crafting project – the wrong choice can lead to unexpected outcomes.

If you’re a DIY enthusiast and feel confident in your ability to handle the attachment process, clips might be the way to go. However, if the thought of securing a topper yourself feels overwhelming, seeking professional help for methods like glue or tape might be a wise choice. After all, the last thing you want is for your topper to make an unscheduled exit during an important event.

Adventure Time: Your Hair Journey

As you stand on the precipice of this hair adventure, take a moment to reflect on whether you’re truly prepared for the commitment, care, and potential surprises that come with a hair topper. It’s not just about instant transformations; it’s about embracing a new aspect of your self-care routine.

Your hair journey is a unique and personal odyssey, and introducing a topper is a chapter in that narrative. If you’ve weighed the pros and cons, seeking expert advice, and are ready for the commitment, then go ahead – embark on this adventure with confidence. Just remember, with great hair comes great responsibility. Your hair, your rules – enjoy the journey!
